United Way of Smith County began caring for Smith County residents in 1940 as the Community Chest. This long tradition of people and businesses working together to build a better community has resulted in the distribution of over 70 million charitable dollars in the Smith County area.
A Community Pillar program began in 2002, that provides businesses and individuals the opportunity to designate their gifts to help cover the operating costs of our local United Way. This allows the largest percentage of dollars given by employees and other individuals to directly help people living in Smith County. Programs and services supported by United Way annually help over 60,000 Smith County residents.
Our local United Way works to identify critical needs and assists local nonprofits through professional development and capacity building. The organization works to connect people and services and unifies the community around helping others.
